If you’ve spent any real time in Oregon City, you know you're not in Portland anymore. Still close enough to downtown and even about 30 minute to the Vancouver waterfront. I love my city and it is a great location away from the big city buzz but close enough to get anywhere you want to be.

A historic downtown you actually feel safe to hang out in. Parks you want to go to for fun and to enjoy the nice weather, when we get it people flock outdoors! Schools that feel dedicated to the community. Local spots where the owners know your name, or will soon enough.

This week’s spotlight is a simple tour of the places I actually like to spend my time, and why that matters when you’re thinking about where to live.

Schools That Anchor the Community

One thing Oregon City does well is consistency. The schools aren’t flashy, they’re steady, familiar, and community-driven.

Families often talk about:

  • Neighborhood schools that feel connected to the areas around them.

  • Longstanding programs, staff, and extracurriculars.

  • A sense that schools are part of daily life, not tucked away somewhere else.

Whether you have kids now or you’re thinking long-term, schools tend to influence how neighborhoods feel. I find this important when you are picking a place to live even if you’re not in that stage of life yet.

Parks & Outdoor Spaces People Actually Use

Oregon City’s parks aren’t just green spaces on a map, they’re part of my weekly routine.

  • McLoughlin Promenade offers river views that never get old

  • Clackamette Park is where summer evenings, boat launches, and events come together

  • Neighborhood parks like Wesley Lynn quietly serve the people who live nearby

These spaces shape how a town feels day to day, dog walks, kids on bikes, evening resets after work. I walk through Wesley park almost daily when I take my dog for a walk, living in Settler's Point has been one of the best neighborhoods I've ever lived in.

Local Businesses That Define the Vibe

This is where Oregon City really shows its personality.

Downtown and the surrounding areas are full of businesses that:

  • Feel rooted, not temporary.

  • Reflect the town’s pace, relaxed, unpretentious, local-first.

  • Give people a reason to stay close instead of driving elsewhere. Many folks live close enough in the neighborhoods at the bottom of the hill to just walk downtown and leave the car at home.

From coffee shops to food carts to small storefronts, we go downtown to the main strip or just Corner 14 for a wide selection of food carts. See my last video about Corner 14 here YouTube Short Corner 14

We also spend a lot of time in "top of the hill" as we call it. The area above downtown and the riverfront community, Molalla Ave. is the main strip here and there are plenty of places to eat, shop and hang out. Top of the hill is where you go if you want a newer home in a more suburban feeling neighborhood. "Bottom of the hill" is where you find all the historic areas and long standing community homes that have been here for a hundred years, or more.

Why This Matters When You’re Choosing a Place to Live

Amenities aren’t just perks, it's where you go when you leave the house.

They tell you:

  • How connected neighbors are. I see my friends and neighbors when we go out all the time.

  • Whether a town feels lived-in or just lived-near. Many people also flock to Oregon City because they live nearby in Beavercreek, Mulino, or Molalla.

  • If a place still feels good when you’re not on vacation or house-hunting.

Oregon City works because daily life works here. Errands are easy. Walks are scenic. Community feels like home.

If you’re curious how different parts of Oregon City compare, or which neighborhoods quietly line up with the lifestyle you want I’m always happy to talk it through. No pitch. Just a local chatting up where he loves to spend his time.
