The Benefits of Rural Living in Clackamas County

by Michael Bouldin

Wide open space, real quiet, and communities that actually feel connected

There’s a certain moment that happens when you drive out of the city and into rural Clackamas County.

The traffic thins.
The air smells different.
The noise fades, and it just feels different.

When I lived in Beavercreek I felt the stress of the day start to melt away everytime I pulled off 213 and started heading down Beavercreek Road.

People are drawn to rural living for different reasons. Some want room to breathe. Some want land. Some want peace. And others just want a slower rhythm of life that feels more grounded and less rushed.

Around Beavercreek, the outer edges of Oregon City, rural living is a different lifestyle.

Beavercreek: Space That Actually Feels Like Space

If you want wide-open views and room between neighbors, Beavercreek is a great place to call home.

This is where properties stretch out. Homes sit on acreage. Fences aren’t just decorative, they mark real land, and keep your animals in. The kind of place where you can go big gardening, build a shop, keep animals, or just enjoy the quiet.

It’s also one of those places where the scenery becomes part of daily life.
Rolling hills. Tree lines. Big Mount Hood views on clear days.

But what stands out most isn’t just the space, it’s the pace. I never felt rushed to go anywhere in the morning on the weekends when I lived on my 2 acres.

Life moves slower here, and people like it that way. You’ll see neighbors wave when you pass. Local events feel connected. Conversations last longer.

It’s rural living that still feels connected, where you trade the sounds of the city for the sounds of the country.

Rural Edges of Oregon City: Close to Everything, Far From the Rush

One of the most unique things about this area is how quickly the environment changes.

You can be near downtown Oregon City… and within minutes be surrounded by fields, trees, and open land. Just follow that river right out of town.

That balance is a big reason people choose the rural edges of the city. You get:

  • Privacy

  • Land

  • Quiet surroundings

  • And still close enough to shopping, restaurants, and services

It’s not remote, it just feels removed.

For outdoor recreation, this area is hard to beat. Trails, rivers, fishing spots, and scenic drives are part of normal life. Weekends don’t require planning, you just step outside. I love getting in the truck to drive the country roads on a nice sunny day.

And when you come home at night, it’s dark. Quiet. Still. Seriously, it gets dark out here. You will need to invest in some good flash lights.

That’s something I enjoyed the most was night time and the stars with the sounds of cricits in the background.

Greater Clackamas County

Across the rural parts of Clackamas County, there’s a shared feeling that shows up again and again, community. Every neighbor and client I have helped is now a long time friend.

Out here you live your life on your own land and know you can depend on your neighbor when you need some help.

You’ll notice:

  • Local businesses that know their customers

  • Community events that actually bring people together

  • Generational families who’ve lived here for decades, even a century or more

  • A strong sense of place and identity

People take pride in where they live. They take care of their land. They show up for each other.

That’s hard to replicate in more densely populated areas.

The Outdoor Lifestyle Becomes Everyday Life

Rural Clackamas County doesn’t require you to schedule time outside.

It’s just… there.

Morning walks on quiet roads.
Space for gardens that produce food enough for you and to share with your neighbors.
Room for animals, equipment, toys, and projects. Oh if you could see the hidden gems in those shops.
Weekend drives that feel like mini getaways. That's my favorite part.

And when the weather cooperates, which Oregonians know is never guaranteed, people use every bit of it.

Nature isn’t something you visit. It’s something you live with.

Why People Stay Once They Move Here

Most people who choose rural living in Beavercreek, Oregon City, or the surrounding areas aren’t just looking for a house.

They’re looking for a different way of living.

More privacy.
More quiet.
More connection to the land.
More connection to people.

And once they find it… they tend to stay.

Because space, peace, and community aren’t upgrades.
They’re quality of life.
